Students don't assess themselves properly (over assess or under assess)
Have a clear rubric in terms the students can understand; Have them practice assessing similar projects beforehand
Parent concerned about students grading themselves/others
Make sure parents are well-informed about the process; let them know that the student assessment is only a portion of the grade and the teacher has the final say
Grading can be subjective in some areas; not a concrete grade
Clear rubric outlining expectations
Students grading higher or lower based on whether someone is a friend or enemy
Bring in life lessons about fairness- ie: do you want someone grading you down because they don't like you?
How do I ensure that students meet standards - and meet enough of them to make the effort worthwhile - in open-ended activities and projects?
Concerns
Solutions
Projects take up too much time using too few standards.
Students are learning & involved at a higher level and subjects are integrated and authentic.
Too much prep. time.
Grade levels/teams can collaborate. Once project has been created, it can be used each year w/ modifications to fit student needs.
